Explain your idea further

More information about rape and sexual assault should be provided to students, particularly freshers new to university life and living alone, so that people are able to recognise it, know what to do if it does happen to them, and know what help and procedures are in place to help them.

How would your idea benefit students?

So many students, including myself, male and female, have been subject to rape and sexual assault whilst at university, and the vast majority have done nothing about it because they don't know how or who to talk to. Allowing students to have this information not only gives students piece of mind, knowing that they have the information should they ever need it, but gives students the information they need - including the procedures of both the university and police service - on hand, if the situation ever arises, so that nobody misses their opportunity to get medical attention for rape cases and justice for every type of incident, as well as well-being advice and counselling to cope with the consequences of such a trauma. To be open about the reality of rape and sexual assault helps de-stigmatise the subject, and allows students to feel as comfortable and confident as possible in talking about their experiences, allowing them to get help as and when they need it.

Additionally, to have the subject so out in the open and prepared for could educate and seriously deter any possible offenders.

How could your idea be implemented?

Freshers should be given information packs or leaflets with all the necessary information upon registration with the university or within the halls of residence. Posters can be utilised in all university buildings rather than just in the Student Union. The University's procedures for dealing with rape and sexual assault cases should be outlined on the university website.

I have recently contacted PARCS to see if we can work with them on delivering more awareness for our students and possibly support groups. A meeting/phone call will take place to discuss options and I will update this HYS idea once I have more information.

The idea has been marked as Fast Tracked. The reason was: UAB felt that the idea was important to a large number of students and would be advantageous for the Union to implement with the resources currently available. Therefore the idea has been marked for immediate action.
