Explain your idea further

"Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia remains a big problem in sport. Seven in ten fans have heard homophobic abuse on the football terraces and shockingly 60 per cent of gay and bi men and 40 per cent of lesbian and bi women expect to experience discrimination if they were to take part in a team sport" - Stonewall Website

Rainbow laces were introduced last year for AU sports clubs and groups to wear at games showing they are open and accepting of LGBT+ members. As only 200 were ordered the impact of this was reduced. By purchasing more of the laces this year the union can further expand the work started last year so more members and sports clubs can wear rainbow laces with pride. Purchasing the laces through Stonewall means that the money spent on laces will be introduced back into making sure sport is everyones game. This time I am hoping to up the amount ordered to 500 laces.

How would your idea benefit students?

As mentioned above, unfortunately Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia remains a big problem in sport. LGBT+ students will feel safer, stronger and more likely to get involved if they know that their team mates have 'got their back' and that sports clubs are a safe space for LGBT+ students to get involved. If teams are all wearing rainbow laces it will introduce more team cohesion to the clubs and hopefully start conversation about LGBT+ matters in sport.

How could your idea be implemented?

Purchasing 500 (or more) laces to be given to teams and groups to wear with pride.
